Dear Band Parents,
I communicate band updates mainly through an email list. Please contact me if you have not received any group emails from me, so we can make sure you and your child have the information that you need to stay successful. I hope to see you soon!

Sept 4th
Woodwinds start tomorrow, Wednesday, September 5th! This includes flutes, clarinets, and saxophones. Band will meet in the multi-purpose room at 7:10 promptly. Children will need to tell the bus driver that they should be let off as soon as the bus pulls up to get to band. Please have your child use the multi-purpose room doors in the horseshoe. Bring your instrument if you have one! If you don’t, come anyway!
Parents, please inform your classroom teacher that your child is in band and which days they may arrive to class late! (We rehearse until 7:50 and then pack up.) Otherwise you may receive a robocall asking where your child is.
Let me know if you have any questions,
Julie Ogle

Band information and sign-ups will come out in the next couple of weeks. A flyer will be sent home in folders, and information will be linked in the school e-newsletter.
Band will be held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday this year from 7:10 – 7:50 am. For the first half of the year, students will come two of these days depending on instrument, and all students will rehearse all three times a week beginning in January. We will rehearse in the multi-purpose room, and students should enter via the outside doors in the horseshoe, as the rest of the building will not yet be open.
Students may pick one of the following instruments to learn: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet (or cornet), French horn, trombone, baritone, percussion. Due to high demand, saxophone and percussion spots are selected by lottery, regardless of any previous experience. No exceptions.
A limited number of school owned instruments are available for rental at the cost of $90/ school year. These instruments must be rented for the whole school year and are available on a first come first serve basis. If you request a rental, you will be contacted as soon as possible to sign a rental agreement. Families are also free to rent from a local music store (See FAQ’s below).
F.A.Q.’s
1. What instruments are offered?
Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax (by lottery), Trumpet (or Cornet), French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, and Percussion (by lottery). Other band instruments may be offered on a case-by-case basis. We do not have piano, guitar, or other string instruments in our band. Please see the above “strings @ F.AVE” tab for more information on our string program.
2. Will there be an opportunity to try out the band instruments?
Possibly. Please contact me with any questions.
3. Do you have to know how to play an instrument or read music?
No, we start from scratch! This band is designed for the benefit of beginning musicians. If your child already plays their chosen band instrument, please contact me.
4. My child rides the bus. Can she still do band?
Please contact me! We need to make sure your child is able to arrive by 7:10 am.
6. What reed size do you recommend?
I recommend #2 ½ for (soprano in Bb) clarinet and #2 for (alto) saxophone.
7. What do percussionists play? Do they rent drums?
Percussionists begin by learning glockenspiel, snare drum, and bass drum. They also learn other instruments such as cymbals, triangle, and tambourine. Percussionists will use the school’s instruments, and are only required to purchase a set of Vic Firth 5A drum sticks (along with the required text book). Optional rentals (including snare drum and glockenspiel) are available at local music stores. I recommend purchasing a practice pad for home practice.
8. Where can I go in Atlanta to rent or buy an instrument?
Atlanta Band Center: 4773 Memorial Drive Decatur, GA 30032. 404-477-3786
Ken Stanton Music: http://www.kenstanton.com/ 770-427-2491
Carere Music: http://www.careremusic.com/ 770-671-0517
Have your child stop by the music room for flyers from these stores.
9. What is the name of the required text book?
We use the band book Essential Elements For Band. If you did not order one from the school when you signed up for band, make sure you purchase the first book in the series and have the correct instrument. The book is available online, as well as locally (last time I checked!) at the stores listed above and also here:
Opus (sheet music store in downtown Decatur): 308 W Ponce deLeon Ave #D 30030 404-370-0507
